Riding Navigation

A navigation system for shared bike riders to improve their riding safety

Type

Individual Project

Duration

June–Aug 2018 (12weeks)

Role

Product Design | UX | UI

OVERVIEW

Problem

These days, shared bikes have become a main mean of transportation in the crowded metropolis in my hometown. Shared bike riders face a safety problem when they use their phones for navigation while riding. It is dangerous because they have to take one hand off the handle bar, pick up their phone and look the next directions on their small phone screens.

Solution

At the beginning and end of the ride:

APP

4-1

Riding in progress:

Navigation

7-1
  • Search routes
  • Search around
  • Scan QR code to unlock the shared bike
  • Pay for the riding
  • View riding record
  • AI face recognition
  • Real-time riding page
  • Dangerous situation alerts by visually and audibly
  • Voice navigation
  • Night riding lamp

Search a Destination and Routes

On the home page, you can search for your destination. The app recommends all related locations.  After choosing one, you can select different routes to start your riding.

Unlock a Bike with Sharing Mode to be Safer

On the Unlock Page, you can choose "Single Mode" and "Sharing Mode". "Sharing Mode" will share your real-time location with your significant others so that if you are late for appointments they will not call & text you which may put you in a dangerous situation on roads.

Pay for Ridings and View Records

After paying for each riding, you can view riding records and routes.

Interview

Learning about user's riding experience

Every time I ride the shared bike going out, those high-speed electric bicycles worry me a lot. That electric bicycle is the bike using for sending takeout in exclusively. The rider of those bikes has to ensure food is delivered to customers on time, so they ride bikes at a high-speed, even don’t care about the traffic regulations.

This week, I have seen two accidents between the shared bike and the electric bicycle for sending takeout. It is so common that when you are on the road, an electric bicycle surpasses you in an extremely close distance suddenly, without any warning. It’s a dangerous behavior, but there seems no good solution to deal with those problems

As for the security problem of riding, the essence is the unawareness of transportation safety. Almost all of us, including me, breaking the traffic rules sometimes is out of the willingness to save time (such as go in a direction not allowed by traffic regulations). It is no doubt that we should overcome the inconvenience and create a safe circumstance. One for all and all for one.

I noticed more and more shared bikes under unified control was put in a certain place beside metro stations, the act helps us to solve the “last-mile” problem perfectly. But actually, those bikes which are placed randomly cause serious hidden-troubles. They make the non-motorized lane narrowed, thus accidents can happen possibly when one bike gives another the right of way.

HOW

      MIGHT

WE?

How might we navigate the shared bike riders without holding their phones when riding?

How might we remind them when they are in dangerous situations?

How might we help the significant others know where the rider's exact positions are without calling them in ridings?

DESIGN

Goals

Safe

As far as safety, there are 2 aspects: whether the environment of using navigation is safe and whether the riding habits/behavior of riders is safe.

Portable

The device should be portable which riders don't hold them all the time. Besides, it should be a smooth move between multiple devices.

Efficient

The reminders and real-time shared information should be immediate and efficient
